hyatt house
sacramento, CA
The eight-story, 128-room Hyatt House is a prime example of historic adaptive reuse in Sacramento. Originally built in 1928, the Eastern Star Hall served as a meeting hall and is notable for its Classical Revival architecture, featuring large columns, grand staircases, and symmetrical facades.
The design preserves the original brick front façade while integrating a new eight-story steel-framed structure to create guestrooms. The project involved extensive demolition, shoring, and retrofitting to maintain the building's historic elements.
The two new levels added above the historic structure create a striking contrast between old and new, highlighted by differences in window size, grid configuration, and the exterior finishes of brick and cement plaster.
